Standards 5: Assess provide feedback and report on student learning
Summary of Standard
The fifth standard of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers is focused on assessment, feedback and reporting. This is a very important standard as these are all required in order for all students learning to be successful. A range of assessments need to take place in the classroom frequently. These assessments can include informal, formal, diagnostic, formative and summative assessments. Each of these types of assessments are very important and all serve as a purpose for benefitting students learning outcomes. Reporting to parents and care givers is also very important and to do this, accurate records of each student’s achievements must be kept.

Focus Area
5.1 Assess student learning
Situation
Throughout my final internship, many assessments were carried out, both informal and formal. There is such an importance for assessment in the classroom and it is vital to students learning. I used many different forms of assessing throughout my final practicum.
Action
There is an application that I used called “Seasaw”. This app has my class list uploaded and allows me to upload assessments, photographs, comments, work samples and anything else that I may need to record for a student. Each student has their own file where I put all their individual information. I also regularly assessed students through check-lists and anecdotal records as I feel they worked well for this particular group of students. I also used marking rubrics for some assessments.
Outcome
Students were able to see how they were going in particular areas. As the teacher, I am able to work out whether, as a class, we are ready to move on to the next topic, whether students have understood what was taught and whether my teaching was effective. Through these different assessments, I am able to know what I need to go over and re teach. These assessments are also very important to show each individuals growth as a learner.
Focus Area
5.1 Assess student learning
Situation
At the start of my final practicum, I needed to know where each student was at in their reading levels.
Action
I took each student out individually to read with them and see what level they were at with their reading. I recorded what level each student was at so that I always knew where students sat in their reading levels. I was then able to share my results with my mentor teacher and also parents who were curious.
Outcome
This really helped me to see what each student was like at reading and I also found it interesting to see which students were the stronger readers. I was then able to give each student reading books aimed for their level. This would allow their reading skills to be developed at a pace that suits their individual needs.
Focus Area
5.2 Provide feedback to students on their learning
Situation
Feedback is something I have always deemed very important for students for developing their learning. With feedback, students are able to see what they are doing well in and what they need extra help with. I frequently gave feedback to each student as I know just how important it actually is.
Action
I spent a little time each day going through students work with them one by one and giving them feedback on how they did. I would go through questions they answered incorrectly and help them to answer it correctly.
Outcome
By giving feedback and going through work individually, it helped each student understand how they are going as learners. Even though this took a lot of time, it was a very important process.

Action Plans
I strongly feel that gaining more knowledge in regards to assessing will help me into becoming a more successful teacher. I also plan on researching different methods of assessing by looking at different ways that other teachers assess their students. There are so many websites that can help me gain the skills I need for successful assessing, including The Australian Curriculum. After completing this portfolio, I plan to attend professional development days, which will help me immensely in regards to my assessment practices.
