Standard 7: Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community
Summary of Standard
The seventh standard of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers is about engaging professionally with colleagues, parents/care givers and the wider community. Through this standard, it is very important to not only know the professional ethics and responsibilities required in the teaching profession, but to also be able to implement them. It is also very important to have an understanding of and implement the legislative, administrative and organizational requirements for the teaching profession. As a teacher, you have a responsibility to work effectively, sensitively and confidently with parents and carers.

Focus Area
7.3 Engage with the parents/carers
Situation
Each day during my professional internship, I stood at the door before and after school and engaged with parents/carers. They would ask me questions about their child and I would have discussions with them about how their child is going with their learning.
Action
Each day of my final practicum, I made sure to stand at the classroom door every morning in case a parent wanted to discuss anything. I spoke to almost every parent numerous times throughout my practicum about a variety of different issues.
Outcome
I was able to make a connection with each parent through engaging with them in numerous ways. This not only benefitted myself, but also each students learning outcomes as I was able to include each parent and carer in their child’s educative process.
Focus Area
7.3 Engage with the parents/carers
7.4 Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
Situation
During my practicum, I wanted to organise something fun and educational for my students. I decided to book a Constable Care visit to come in and perform a puppet show about safety. This Constable Care incursion was free so parents didn’t have to pay for anything.
Action
The puppet show allowed for 50 kids, so I had a discussion with the kindergarten teacher to find out if her class wanted to attend the show as well. After discussing this with my mentor teacher, the Kindergarten teacher and the Principal, I went ahead and booked Constable Care to come and visit our school for an incursion. After booking the date for the incursion, I then created a note to send out to parents and carers, informing them about Constable Care and any other important information regarding the incursion.
Outcome
The incursion ended up being a really fun and exciting show where students were able to learn all about road safety in an age appropriate way. The incursion was a success and students, staff and parents were very pleased with the result.

Action Plans
When I have my own class, I will definitely try to organise as many incursions and excursions that not only involve the community, but are educational for students. Incursions and excursions are a great way for students to learn about our wider community and what it means to be a part of a community. I will endeavour to engage parents and carers in the planning process as often as possible. Encouraging participation in school events is also a great way to show students all the positives of being a part of a community. In my future classroom, I would like to get parents and carers involved in any incursions or excursions that may occur and also all school events.
