~Professional Engagement~
Standard 6: Engage in professional learning
Summary of Standard
The sixth standard of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers requires teachers to engage in professional learning. This includes understanding the purpose the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and also understanding the relevant resources available for all teachers to engage in their professional learning. This standard focuses on engaging with colleagues to better children’s education. This can be carried out through seeking and apply constructive feedback given from supervisors and other teachers.

Focus Area
6.2 Engage in professional learning
Situation
Each Tuesday after school, I attended the school staff meeting. This meeting roughly ran for an hour and each week consisted of a different topic.
Also, throughout my professional internship, each Thursday afternoon, all of the early childhood teaching staff attended a meeting after school to learn more about the National Quality Standards. I also attended several of these meetings.
Action
Each staff meeting differed from one another. One week it would be a general meeting about the school as a whole and then the next week we would have a guest speaking talking. I was able to learn a lot about what was going on in the school.
On Thursdays, I had the opportunity to learn in depth about each of the National Quality Standards and how to implement them successfully into the classroom.
Outcome
I learnt a lot from each staff meeting each week. It was very interesting to see how an individual school ran and what issues required a discussion. It was also a great experience to see teachers interact with each other about important issues within the school.
I now have a greater understanding about each of the quality standards and feel much more prepared to implement them into my future teaching. I found these meetings to be extremely informative and educational.
Focus Area
6.3 Engage with colleagues and improve practice
Situation
Throughout my internship, I would seek and apply specific feedback that I was given from supervisors and teachers to improve my teaching practices. Feedback was such an important aspect to my learning as a student teacher while on my final practicum.
Action
I strongly encouraged my mentor teacher to frequently give me feedback about how I was doing so that I could improve in any area that needed improvement. My feedback was given to me in both written and verbal form. Verbal feedback occurred much more frequently. Almost every day, my mentor teacher gave me feedback on how I was going. This really helped me as a pre-service teacher.
Outcome
This frequent feedback allowed me to develop and strengthen in particular areas that were needed. My supervisor and mentor teacher told me many times that they really liked the fact that I would take whatever feedback I was given, both good and bad, then worked on them and applied them in my teaching.

Action Plans
Engaging in professional learning is vital to being a successful teacher. I plan to regularly seek feedback from other members of the teaching profession so I can grow and develop into a successful teacher. Through given feedback, I will be able to constantly reflect on myself as a teacher to improve my teaching practice. I plan on attending many different professional development workshops and seminars as I strongly believe they will help me to continue to develop and improve as a practitioner. I plan to continue to constantly find new ways to improve myself within this standard.
